You may not associate China with the cold, however, in the city of Harbin it gets cold, very cold! With temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius the locals need a way to keep themselves warm, to do this they keep busy by hosting the Harbin international Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival.
Artists and engineers get together to build massive ice sculptures that include churches, pagodas, places and pyramids. Once complete the ice sculptures almost cover the same land mass as a small town, the sculptures even have modern amenities like escalators and elevators.
Multicoloured lights are installed in the ice to create the beautiful colours when it gets dark. The festival first started in 1985 and has been getting bigger and bigger every single year.
